From cacti through algae and vitamin-rich flowers to drought-resistant root vegetables, Knorr and WWF have compiled a list of 50 nutritious foods whose consumption would be more advantageous for human health, while their cultivation would benefit our planet relative to our present dominant food sources.
According to a survey by FAO, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation, humans make their everyday meals using a remarkably small set of ingredients: 75 percent of our species’ food supply comes from just twelve agricultural crops and five animal species, although we know more than 20,000 plant species suitable for human consumption.
Why is that important? On the one hand, because an insufficiently diverse diet makes it more difficult to get all the vitamins and trace elements that we need, and on the other hand because it is also unhealthy for our planet.
If we keep sowing, cultivating and consuming the same plants over and over again, we jeopardise the security of the food supply, because that type of cultivation is more vulnerable to pests and the impacts of climate change. That kind of crop cultivation is also related to the reduction of biodiversity, and that may have a grave impact on our fragile natural ecosystems.
Knorr has teamed up with the UK organisation of the WWF as well as leading scientists, nutritionists and agricultural experts to compile the Future 50 Foods report.
The publication features 50 nourishing plant-based foods selected on the basis of nutritional value and relative environmental impact from cacti through algae to kale, and from parsley root through various mushrooms to pumpkin flowers.
