According to new research results published in the scientific journal Nature Communications, climate change could bring droughts and floods of unprecedented severity to Africa over the next eighty years. The researchers primarily attribute the meteorological extremes to the burning of fossil fuels, which increases the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere.
The new meteorological study predicts that western and central regions of Africa will suffer the most from these extreme weather conditions, which may also have a catastrophic impact on food production.
“We have been able to model – in much finer detail than was previously possible – the manner in which rainfall patterns will change over Africa,” Kendon explained. For instance, while previously it was believed that intense rainfalls would only occur in the region every thirty years, according to the new study, such weather anomalies can be expected to occur every three to four years.
